DUBAI – The Emirates Golf Federation Order of Merit Championship will mark the grand finale of the 2011-2012 golfing season in the country when the premier event is played at The Els course on May 18 and 19.
This season-ending event which replaces previous Scratch Matchplay Championship, will see top 30 men and ladies players on the EGF Order of Merit (gross) join the leading 20 juniors in a strong field that promises to showcase the rising standards of the game in the UAE.
The new-look event, which will follow the stroke-play format, is aimed at honouring all those players who have supported the Order of Merit events during the season.
Talented Michael Harradine emerged on top in the Men’s Order of Merit (gross) with a tally of 268.8 points, well ahead of Paul King (189.3) and Craig Forrest (187.5). Four title wins in 12 qualifying events highlighted his successful season.
The ladies Order of Merit, in contrast, turned out to be a one-sided affair with young Sana Tufail winning 10 of the 11 events. She collected an impressive 324 points to finish on top ahead of Kavita Sehmi (229 points) and Anastasia Bakal (184).
“We are very pleased to announce this new championship which will bring together top talent in the country and reflects on the strides we have taken in creating a competitive environment for the players,” said Saeed Albudoor, general manager of the Emirates Golf Federation.
“With all top players on the Orders of Merit in the fray, I am sure it will produce quality golf befitting the occasion,” he said, adding: “The championship will also provide us with an opportunity to thank all players, sponsors and clubs for supporting us during the season.”
“The introduction of this new championship is part of our several initiatives that we have taken to stimulate interest in the game. With so much to offer in terms of facilities, we do hope to produce quality players in years to come.”
