DUBAI – The rising mercury notwithstanding, the Handicap Scheme Medal, organised by the Emirates Golf Federation, has once again generated an overwhelming response with a full field lining up for honours when the event gets under way at the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club on Friday, July 30.
The event -- the second of a four-event summer series – has, in fact, been oversubscribed, forcing the organisers to have additional tee times to accommodate all players on the waiting list. The Medal events are meant exclusively for EGF Handicap scheme members, offering a great opportunity to players to improve upon on their respective handicaps while playing a round of golf at very reasonable rates. “It’s good see to so many players, including lady golfers, responding enthusiastically to our Medal event despite hot weather conditions,” said Saeed Albudoor, general manager of the Emirates Golf Federation. “The very fact that the event has been oversubscribed amply shows there is no dearth of enthusiasm for the game here in the UAE. “We are really grateful to the golf clubs for their support in helping us to put together these Handicap Scheme events,” he said. Competition, as usual, will be held in two categories. The division A (0-14 handicap) will follow the stroke-play format while the Division B (15-28) will see players battle for individual stableford points. The top golfers in each division will be awarded attractive prizes. There are also prizes for the best lady golfer and the winners of the nearest to the pin and longest drives. Meanwhile, the EGF is planning a winter handicap series for its members. “It will be held after September this year,” said Albudoor. The events will help EGF members who, in addition to enjoying regular golf days, can attain handicaps according to the USGA Handicapping systems, introduced recently by the apex body for golf in the UAE.
